The answer is Yes. In fact AI accelerates development, but it doesn't replace the understanding needed to build reliable, secure, and maintainable software.

With all the AI tools available now, is studying Coding still necessary?

There is a school where I work as a STEM Club instructor. A coleague of mine found me in a coding class and asked me whether with all the available AI tools that can code a website in two minutes, teaching coding is still necessary.

The answer is Yes. In fact, AI has changed what programming skills are valuable, but it has not eliminated the need to learn programming. The people who benefit most from AI are usually those who understand software development and here are the reasons:

1. AI writes code, but it doesn't truly understand your business

You might ask AI:

"Build me a school management system."

AI can generate a good starting point. But it doesn't know:

  • How your school's workflow actually operates,

  • Uganda's education requirements, Your users' needs, and Your long-term vision.

A programmer can translate those real-world requirements into a working system and recognize when AI's output is incorrect or incomplete because the truth is 'AI makes mistakes'.

2. AI makes mistakes

Even the best AI models can:

  • Generate code with bugs.

  • Use outdated libraries.

  • Introduce security vulnerabilities.

  • Produce inefficient software and misunderstand complex requirements.

If you don't understand programming, it becomes difficult to tell whether the code is correct, and whether the code is doing exactly what you want it to do.

3. Programming is more than writing code

Software development involves:

  • - Analyzing problems.

  • - Designing databases.

  • - Planning system architecture.

  • - Testing.

  • - Debugging.

  • - Security.

  • - Performance optimization.

  • - Maintenance.

AI can assists with these tasks but doesn't replace the need for human judgment.

4. AI is like a very fast assistant

Think of AI as a calculator.

Calculators didn't eliminate the need to learn mathematics—they allowed mathematicians, engineers, and accountants to solve problems faster.

Similarly, AI doesn't eliminate programming; it lets programmers build software much more quickly.

5. The future belongs to AI-assisted programmers

Today's most productive developers often:

  • Ask AI to generate boilerplate code.

  • Use AI to explain unfamiliar code.

  • Let AI write tests.

  • Have AI review code.

  • Use AI to document projects.

  • Use AI to debug problems.

Instead of spending hours writing routine code, they spend more time designing better solutions.

However, if your goal is simply to:

  • Create a basic website, build simple forms, automate a few repetitive tasks or create simple internal apps, then AI-powered no-code and low-code platforms may be enough. But if you want to build serious systems...

For projects such as:

  • This our school management system, hospital management system, banking applications, E-commerce platforms, Mobile apps, and Enterprise software, programming knowledge remains extremely valuable. AI accelerates development, but it doesn't replace the understanding needed to build reliable, secure, and maintainable software.

Considering the work on this website for example,

Working with web technologies, integrating services such as SMS and attendance devices, online payments, and using AI-assisted tools to build applications, learning programming is still one of the highest-return investments one can make. Every programming concept you learn makes you more effective at directing AI, evaluating its suggestions, and customizing systems beyond what AI can generate automatically.

A good approach in 2026 is:

  • Learn one backend language (such as Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, or C#).

  • Learn SQL and database design thoroughly.

  • Learn HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for web development.

  • Learn Git for version control.

  • Use AI every day as your coding partner just like a wholesaler uses a calculator, not as a replacement.

The programmer who combines solid fundamentals with AI tools are generally able to build better software, solve harder problems, and work significantly faster than either traditional programmers or people who rely entirely on AI.
